In Alfred Jarry's Exploits & Opinions of Dr Faustroll, Pataphysician, a Painting Machine ejaculates thirteen paintings onto the walls the Palace of Machines beneath Paris. "Farther! Farther! cries God to the Meek is one (described by Jarry, below) and the most immediately evocative. An underpainting holds the entire work together, but was then covered in a wash of reds before certain lines were picked back out in thin lines of black.
The mountains are red, the sun and the sky are red. A finger points toward the peak. The rocks surge upward, the unmistakable summit not in sight. The bodies of those who have not reached it tumble upside down. One falls backward on his hands, dropping his guitar. Another waits with his back to the mountain, near his bottles. One lies down on the road, letting his eyes continue to climb. The finger still points, the sun waits for obedience before it will set.
