Een krab (after Van Gogh)
Oil on wood panel
10" x 8"
A study after Van Gogh's Twee Krabben.
Upon visiting the National Gallery, I was struck by how the crowds were gathering around Van Gogh's famous Sunflowers whilst virtually ignoring his painting of two crabs immediately to the left of it, a piece that I thought was the most striking painting in the whole gallery.
I painted this study of it as soon as I got home, and it later found its way into a larger composition, Dead krab by a calm sea.
