Dead krab by a calm seaOil on canvas
30" x 20" May 2022 Merging an abstract seascape with a figurative foreground, Dead krab by a calm sea takes Van Gogh's Twee Krabben (hanging at the National Gallery) as its starting point. Upon visiting the National Gallery, I was struck by how the crowds were gathering around Van Gogh's famous Sunflowers whilst virtually ignoring his painting of two crabs immediately to the left of it, a piece that I thought was the most striking painting in the whole gallery. I painted a study of it as soon as I got home, and it later found its way into this larger painting. |
